People either love this or hate it! I remember a few years ago when no one had even heard of this...
Having not read any of the books, I'm curious to know what you guys think? Will these hours be well spent, or should I just stick to reading my Chemistry textbooks?

I think it is a good read, personally I think the second one drags a little bit in the middle but apart from that I would recomend it. Definitely worth a look I'd say

HELL NO. I'm not judging anyone who likes those books, but I personally couldn't get through them because the writing is so bad, I felt embarrassed for the author. It's not just the story that's bad...the actual mechanics of it, like wording and grammar, are bad too. I can't get over my disbelief at how popular Twilight is. But every person's taste is different, and maybe you'll like them? They're just really, really not for me.

I agree with boomerang, although I'd like to add that it's the characterization that I hate the most, particularly Bella's. She is portrayed as a weak, haughty little madam who cares for nothing else in life besides Edward. Her life revolves around a man, or vampire, in this case. That's not to say that I'm not a fan of epic love stories, because I am, but Twilight is not epic and the 'love story' portrayed is a badly disguised abusive relationship. Bella is a doormat for Edward and he is literally all she has in life. I think it's a really bad standard to set for girls because it gives them a want for an unhealthy relationship like this. Gross.
Plus, SMeyer can't write for shit. Excuse my language.

Conversely, I actually really like the twilight books for the story, it went around my friendship group really quickly before the huge boom thing so I didn't get any of hype influencing me at all. It isn't a great model for young girls I do have to admit but I quite like the humour and a lot of the extra characters are quite engaging. (I.e I loved Alice when I read it) That's not to say I think that all the decisions Stephenie Meyers made were good ones, I just really enjoyed her world . And to contradict Sarah, whom I love dearly and would not usually disagree with , I think Stephenie Meyer is an amazing writer, not particularly for twilight but for her other book The Host which I read directly after it: it hooks me ever time. The characters are better developed in it I feel and the concepts are much more adult and interesting and I would definitely recommend you read that, if not Twilight. I will stop sounding like a literature student now I swear.

Oh, I have The Host and I do find the premise of it intriguing.
Have any of you read the Vampire Diaries?
I just found out that they've made it into a TV show, and after watching the trailer I wanted to burn my retinas after discombobulating the producers for launching such an abomination onto our screens...

oh wow, i didn't even realise this topic is up.
I'll be honest, i'm a bit of a Twilight fangirl but i read it a few months before the whole hype started so i also wasn't influenced into it. I think the reason people love it so much is because they can fall in love with Edward or Jacob... I hate Bella as a character though, but she's quite good for being 'plain' so the reader can see themselves in her shoes.
Meyer as a writer... hm. Her writing is pretty poor for the Twilight Saga, but then again, you can be shit if your characters are interesting (eg. Harry Potter & the Philosopher's Stone) I'll also agree with how amazing The Host is. I have never cried so much during a book in my whole life. Crying four or five times a day is not good for you lol

No, no and a million times no.
I could write a dissertation on 'Why I hate Twilight'. But I won't go into that now.

I've seen the film and it's ok, quite sweet in parts, actually, but it's nothing too special in my opinion. I think the best I can say is, if you're interested, read the books and form your own opinion on them.
